The Umadai Desert

East of the Wildplains and West of the Eastern City-states lies a vast desert that was once the Ancient Umadai Kingdom. Bordered on the South by a large chain of mountains, broken by a single great river through the middle.

The Umadai were a great desert kingdom ruled by high magic, and close connection with genies and the four beast gods. It was an exotic land of magic flying carpets, desert oases, and intrigue around every corner. Magic provided easily for the wants of all of the Umadai population, there was no concept of hunger or poverty. After about 700 years of unrivaled prosperity, a magical cataclysm destroys the kingdom overnight. The exact nature of the cataclysm is uncertain. Umadai elders who remember the event in their youth remember differing accounts of magical destruction ranging from fiery meteors raining down from the sky, to great beasts taller than the spires of the mosques ravaging the buildings.

Today, scattered remnants of the Umadai survive in a primitive, hostile desert. Windblasted ruins and sands characterize this vast desert. The few rare oases serve as headquarters for the nomadic Umadai that remain, their once great magic all but lost.

The Umadai people alive today have had centuries of mixing with genies and genasi, so they all have at least a cosmetic detail that reminds of this history. Sometimes, their eyes have a subtle, fiery glow, sometimes their skin is rough and dry, sometimes their fingernails are black or brown, sometimes their voice has an otherworldly quality to it. In all other respects beyond subtle cosmetics, they are humans with dark skin and exotic features.
